Well in the 1871 Census Jonathan and Sarah live in Elton, Lancashire age 29 and 27 respectively. Jonathan is occupied as a 'stripper/grinder' in the mills, essentially an engineer who keeps the machinery ticking over and Sarah is a 'cotton slubber', preparing the cotton for spinning by removing the 'slubs' or imperfections in the yarn.

Then we can leapfrog 30 years and find them in their late 50's in the 1901 Census and in a considerably expanded household. Note again that the surname is mis-spelt with a single instead of a double 'n'. The dropped 'n' is picked up once more in the 1911 Census.

And then we can leap forward another ten years and find them still going strong in the 1911 Census at 23 Cinder Hill with what looks like some grand children to bounce around on ageing knees.

The next thing to do will be to see if we can discover exactly who the parents of Jonathan are.

We do, however know that Jonathan departs us in 1919 age 77.
